The first Hero’s Golf Outing was held in October 2001, just a few short weeks after nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the attack on New York City. The day was cold, with temperatures in the mid to upper 30’s with sleet, rain, some snow with gusty winds thrown in. The weather did not deter the over 100 golfers that participated in this most worthy of causes.
All the proceeds from this first event was taken to New York City and presented to the New York State Sheriff’s Association. Since that first event, the Hero’s Golf Outing has grown to become an annual event held at Skyland Pines Golf Course in Canton, Ohio each year on September 11th.
The Hero’s Golf Committee meets to choose a recipient family each year in January. While we all wish that Ohio Safety Force officers (i.e. police officers and fire fighters) remain safe for the duration of their careers, the sad fact is that some of these brave public servants give their lives in the performance of their duties. True Patriots and, most of all, true Heroes.
